Famous Van Van Oil

The main ingredients for Van Van oil include Verbena/Vervain, Vetiver, and lemongrass. The name Vervain is pronounced (vurh-vahn) in French Creole, but is Americanized to Van Van which is how the oil got its name.
Van Van oil was once considered the most popular multipurpose condition oil in Louisiana and in Hoodoo in general. The oil is believed to bring about luck and power to its user. It is also believed to be able to remove tricks and roots. According to recordings by Zora Neal Hurston.

It’s said you couldn't go anywhere in Algiers without smelling Van Van oil.
Algiers is the second oldest area of New Orleans. It was a location where slaves were sent and held before sale and where many people of different cultures met.

My Dad says my grandmother and her sisters used to travel to New Orleans a lot. His family is from Tennessee though which is also known for Hoodoo. My people had a candle, incense, and oil shop and sold all types of oils and candles and more. I have released recordings of my father elaborating a little about the family shop and my Grandmothers trips to New Orleans. But with that being said, i’m not sure how she came across the knowledge of Van Van oil I just know I got it from my grandmother. I don’t know if she knew about it before she went to New Orleans or not, i'm just happy that I know about this beautiful oil.
